History of Salt Mining in the Preesall Area
Gordon writes:
The area between Preesall Hill and the river is riddled with brine wells, all of which required a huge amount of fresh water pumped through them to dissolve the salt and make the brine solution which was then pumped under the river to the Works at Burn Naze.

The problem of the water supply was extreme and very extensive areas of land in Over-Wyre were bought up simply to secure access to sufficient water which was pumped from many wells all over the place to the areas over the salt deposits.

In the 1950s the whole of the Parrox Estate in Pilling was purchased by ICI for this reason and most of my great grandfather's extensive lands (Burrow's Farm) in Preesall were also sold to ICI.
